HostPapa Review

Currently, HostPapa is hosting more than 500,000 websites on its data centers in the USA and Canada. That’s very impressive because they only started in 2006 by Jamie Opalchuck.
The secret behind their success might be the variety of customer service options. They offer phone support in many languages including English, French, Spanish, and German to international and domestic clients. To check them out we bought the HostPapa ‘Starter Plan’ in June 2015. First, we set up a simple WordPress website. You can see their statistics by yourself here. If you need more information, click History.
So, let’s dig into the review.

Advantages of HostPapa Hosting

At the very beginning, we were impressed with their great uptime and the variety of customer support options they offer. So, let’s have a look at the pros of HostPapa hosting.

1. Good Uptime

We are delighted to tell you that their uptime has been good since the first day. The 24-month average value was 99.95%.

Average Uptimes during last year:

  • January 2020 average uptime: 99.99%
  • December 2019 average uptime: 100%
  • November 2019 average uptime: 99.88%
  • October 2019 average uptime: 99.70%
  • September 2019 average uptime: 100%
  • August 2019 average uptime: 99.94%
  • July 2019 average uptime: 99.95%
  • June 2019 average uptime: 99.98%
  • May 2019 average uptime: 100%
  • April 2019 average uptime: 100%
  • March 2019 average uptime: 99.99%
  • February 2019 average uptime: 99.63%

As the great uptime, their page loading speeds are admirable. HostPapa delivered an average page loading time of 705ms during the last two year period. That is well above the industry average.

3. Various Support Options

HostPapa gives you a variety of support options to choose from. They have a huge library of self-help videos and provide 24/7 support via phone, mail, email, and even fax!
Moreover, HostPapa provides phone support in 18 countries and provides support in different languages like English, French, German, and Spanish. HostPapa is amongst the few hosts that are providing support in different languages.
And the best thing is they have ‘Papa Squad Experts’. That is a one on one session, with guided walkthroughs using video or telephone conference.
Our experience with the customer service representative was pretty good actually. we were able to get a response within less than a minute. And the answers were provided within about two minutes.

4. Proactive Security Features

All the hosting plans in HostPapa come with Panda Cloud antispam protection enabled along with server firewall, monitoring, and intrusion detection. As more than 37,000 websites get hacked daily these proactive measures will be very reassuring.
Considering HostPapa’s Business Pro plan, it comes with added features like domain privacy protection, a free SSL certificate, a dedicated IP address, and even automated website backups.

5. 30 Day Money Back Guarantee and Site Migration

For most of the hosting plans, HostPapa offers an industry-standard 30-day money-back guarantee.
And also they will help you to transfer your existing website from another host while giving a free domain name also.

6. Good Value for the price

The basic pricing starts from $3.95 for the initial three years. If you are signing up for a time period of fewer than three years there will be some extra charges. And the pricing will be low for new customers even though the renewal price will increase to $7.99/month on the same starter plan. Quite similar to most of the hosts, right?
But there are some good things. The first one is that they offer a lot for this initial pricing including two websites, free domain registration, 100 GB SSD storage, and Unmetered bandwidth.
The second thing is you will get the “Essential Features”. They are a free website migration, Cloudflare CDN, SSL certificate, and access to their 400+ apps and website builder.
So in conclusion, this is a good deal!

Disadvantages of HostPapa Hosting

Even though our experience is good, our background check revealed that other customers do not experience the same results. And there are some issues with hidden fees also.
Have a look.

1. Poor Customer Experience with Support

As I have mentioned previously, our experience with the customer support was good. But the experience of the other customers was below average.

2. Additional Fees

In HostPapa, if you request a refund during The initial 30 day period, they will charge you a $29.95 setup fee upon cancellation. So basically the free money-back guarantee is not free and the website set up either.
