HostMonster Review

Even though there is a saying that ” Some things get better with age”, not all will be so. Today we are going to present you another web hosting review. And that is about HostMonster.
The particular web hosting company was established in 1996 and merged with EIG in 2015. Before merging it was one of the oldest web hosts in the industry.
We purchased the ‘Basic Plan’ of HostMonster in June 2015. And then created a basic WordPress website and kept monitoring the vital statistics like speed and uptime for a few months.
And now here we are, ready to present to you the results.

Advantages of HostMonster Hosting

Though they have been around the block a few times, now HostMonster is owned by one of the biggest industrial conglomerates. So, below are the main positive things they offer.

1. Above-average uptime (99.96%)

Depends on our analysis the average uptime of the Industry is around 99.93%.
Achieving an uptime above the industry average, HostMonster has provided a value of 99.96% during the last two years. Which is amazing.

Average uptimes of the last two years:

  • January 2020 average uptime: 99.99%
  • December 2019 average uptime: 99.98%
  • November 2019 average uptime: 99.96%
  • October 2019 average uptime: 99.85%
  • September 2019 average uptime: 99.96%
  • August 2019 average uptime: 99.96%
  • July 2019 average uptime: 99.93%
  • June 2019 average uptime: 99.98%
  • May 2019 average uptime: 99.97%
  • April 2019 average uptime: 99.98%
  • March 2019 average uptime: 99.96%
  • February 2019 average uptime: 100%

2. Decent Customer Support (But inconsistent)

We were able to connect to their live chat support agent within about 4 minutes. And he answered our questions one by one. Took about two minutes to answer a question. Even though it wasn’t mind-blowing, reasonably good.
They offer phone, email, and live chat support. But there is a lengthy verification process which might be inconvenient for some users.
During our background check, we also got some inconsistent reviews from other customers too. So better to proceed with caution.

3. Good Security Options

You can get some different security options to select when you signed up with HostMonster. They will help you to protect your site and keep away the bad programs.
The main way WordPress sites get hacked is via the vulnerability of their hosting company. A study revealed a percentage of 41%. The most common culprits are ‘insecure themes’ and ‘vulnerable plugins’.
When considering HostMonster, they include various security features such as Hotlink Protection, SSH Access, SSL support, regular site backups, and Spam Assassin protection for a more secure site.

4. Instant provisioning and Fast setup

HostMonster will provide you instant provisioning if you are going with their dedicated or VPS hosting.
If you want to get started quickly, and you won’t need a long verification process this will definitely be good news. Your servers will be ready in just a few seconds!
Another good news is that HostMonster gives you a free domain name for a year with all new plans like most of the hosting companies.

5. Good Value (50 GB Storage, Unmetered Bandwidth, Free SSL)

Though the Basic Plan is not cheap (That is $4.95 per month) you will get a good value for the price.
The benefits will be up to 50GB storage, Unmetered bandwidth, and even a free SSL certificate.
And GoDaddy tries to upsell you another $100 per year for the same feature even. So you will realize the initial pricing of HostMonster is quite decent.

Disadvantages of HostMonster Hosting

Up until now our experience with HostMonster was good. But when considering the reviews from other people, there are some negative aspects also.

1. Average Page Load time over the last 24 months

During the past 2 years, HostMonster delivered an average page speed of 936ms. That is not the best and not the worst we have seen either.
The load time of a website is a crucial thing. The Aberdeen group have found that only a small one-second delay will hit across the board:

  • 7% reduction in conversions
  • 11% reduction in page views
  • 16% reduction in customer satisfaction

Average load times of HostMonster:

2. Misleading Pricing with Long Commitment Required

HostMonster doesn’t offer you a true ‘month-to-month’ plan, with the minimum requirement starting at 12 months. And for this option, the price is somewhat expensive.
Let’s take an example. If you like the cheaper ‘pro
‘Promotional’ rate they show on the site, you are required to pay in full upfront, for three years. That is not fair. Right?
Sadly, the same technique is also the standard practice in the hosting arena.

3. Hidden Costs and Fees

Surprisingly, in HostMonster there are some hidden costs too.
The first one is that the low promotional rate is only applicable to new plans. When your plan renews the price will rise back to the regular rate.
The next thing is their ‘free domain name’ is not free. If you are deciding to cancel your account, you will be charged a nonrefundable fee.

4. They charge for backups

If you are planning to enable backups, be ready to pay a monthly charge of $1.99. Among the hosts, we have reviewed most of them provides backups for free! That will leave second thoughts.

5. Expensive Migration Costs

Almost all the hosts we have reviewed offer free site migrations. But sadly, HostMonster uses it as a money-making opportunity. They only allow free site migration only through FTP (File Transfer Protocol). But the time is taken will be longer.
The cost for site migration will be $149.99 up to five sites and 20 email accounts.
According to our opinion, the worst thing is HostMonster doesn’t offer free site migration even for the first time.

6. High Plan Renewal Costs

The most common problem with many web hosts is you will only get the advertised prices if you are prepaying for a minimum of three years.
Regarding HostMonster, their monthly rates will double from $4.95 per month up to $10 for the same service. The price of bigger plans like Plus, Choice, and Plus Pro will rise higher.
In conclusion, if you are not planning to change the host, it’s better to prepay.

What is our recommendation?

We don’t recommend HostMonster.
That is because of the average performance, inconsistent customer support, low page loading speeds, and pricing tricks. There are better hosts who give you great value for the money.
